I was at the gym like usual and came across a vendor with a very interesting product. He was selling Theragold, which is "a breakthrough natural pain relief formula, the first of it's kind with Manuka Honey that can quickly and effectively alleviate inflammation, muscle aches and nerve pain- with NO known side effects and without a prescription.
After striking up a conversation with the owner, it was determined he was doing a phenomenal job in getting his product out. It is not only on the web at theragold.com but also on Amazon and getting into retail stores as well. He was extremely friendly and knowledgable about his product.
I have a collection of BioFreeze that will last me to the next ice age. When I have muscle aches (daily) I spray it on and it feels nice. The menthol wears off and I am left in pain.
It's the menthol in most products that gate the pain. In others capsaicin. Pain nerve fibers transmit pain extremely slow to the brain. So if we can stimulate other nerves that fire to the same area of the brain in different ways- the other nerves win the race and the pain is not experienced as drastically.
In Theragold, they use:
Manuka honey in itself has been used for a long time for severe burns due to it's anti- bacterial properties. Arnica has been shown to increase white blood cell activity to a region, causing a healing cascade to occur. Ginger is excellent for digestion but in this case, can be used as an irritant for gating pain. The same can be said of cayenne and peppermint. Rose hip has been found to decrease arthritis pain as does clary sage and lemon balm. Glycerine pulls it all together.
This product seemed interesting and we decided to do a case study on it. As Theragold advertises "Rapid Natural Pain Relief", we accepted this challenge.
We recruited a physically active female, 35 years of age, who does HIIT resistance exercises 5x week. Before the study began, she had no pain in her lower extremity. Her diet remained unchanged and she did not use any other pain relief gels, creams or pills other than Theragold. She did not receive any chiropractic treatments before or during this study.
The subject completed a series of lower extremity exercises, created by a world class professional certified strength and conditioning specialist, with the sole purpose of creating delayed onset muscle soreness in both thighs.
Upon onset of muscle soreness, Theragold was liberally applied to only the right thigh, leaving the left thigh untreated by any intervention whatsoever (the control).
The subject's thighs took approximately 72 hours to completely heal from the resistance exercises given. At that time, no pain was present. The subject reported, "the Theragold was pleasant in smell and felt nice when applied". However, there was no difference whatsoever in either increase or decrease of pain on the thigh the Theragold was applied to.
Pain creams use an irritant to gate pain (as previously discussed). Unfortunately the absorption into the blood stream and directly into the muscle is suspect at best. Manuka honey may have anti-inflammatory properties in it but if it cannot penetrate into the affected area, those properties mean nothing. Therapies are able to use electric stimulation to "push" ingredients transcutaneously but without a sure fire delivery system, pain creams will continue to "feel nice" but have little if any effect on true "Rapid Natural Pain Relief".
